Shall we keep the honorifics in our translation?

name-san, name-sama, name-chan.

It's how Japanese address others. It's much more polite than how we do of course.

Pokémon Adventures is based on the games. Therefore, the best way to translate is keeping terminologies used in the games, this includes saying "Mr. Giovanni" instead of Sakaki-sama or Giovanni-sama, for instance.

If this was any other manga, it would be reasonable, but Pokémon is different, once it already has its official translations in many mediums.

Now I got it. lol And no, I say we take them out. I understand it is the Japanese way to address each other, but it doesn't seem to make sense anymore when you translate to English or Chinese. In fact, Even Chinese translations in manga had taken off the honorfics. I think those who want honorfics just want to keep absolutely everything in a manga and it's a little bit overdoing.

I think we should keep them because Senpai sounds better than Senior and PokeSpe is the only manga/light novel/subbed-anime I've ever seen that omits them.

I think we shouldn't use honorifics. How did /a/non handle it, by the way?

Then I really don't think that we should. It makes it looks unnatural in English, no other Pokémon medium uses it, not even the official translations of PokéSpe and the readers of /a/non's scanlations are used to not have honorifics in the scanlations.

Dragonguard scanlation used honorifics and people who read those scans were fine with it.

Can you at least use Senpai instead of Senior for newer dexholders speaking of/addressing the older ones? That's the only real complaint about the removal of honorifics so far in the series I have, Senior just doesn't feel right to be used in place of a name.

It might have the same meaning but it doesn't have the same feel to it.

We could just don't use anything. No Senpai or Senior, nor san, chan, kun etc. As I said, Pokémon is not like the other manga/anime/novels, it's based on a game that is already officially translated, and I will stick to the game's terms as much as I can.

Well, people had the alternative to read nicoleb's Chuang Yi scans back then, nowadays nobody is scanning Pokémon Adventures in English unlike during the 'PokéCommunity era'.

I mainly meant for the places where Senior/Senpai is used in place of a name.

Like Sapphire calling Green "senior", instead of her name? She could call her "Green" only.

That would work I suppose.

PS: Green Oak is not a girl, if either of Green/Blue show up in future chapters please make sure they don't get mixed up. I don't care if the "official" translators screw that up we know better and should do it right.

Actually both are right. In japan Blue is the girl and green the boy, but in Viz and CY it's the other way around, because Green version was never released. But i say we stick to Blue as girl and Green as boy.

My answer to this issue is always the same. If I'm speaking Japanese, I call him Green Ookido, if I'm speaking English, he is Blue Oak.

The games use Blue (HGSS), so I'm more used to it both from SoulSilver and VIZ's volumes and I prefer to use Blue as the name of the boy and Green as the name of the girl, but there's no big difference for me about that.

I still say that any translations that have those names switched around are wrong, but as long as you agree we should have Blue and Green Oak I'll agree to disagree on that point.

The fact is I used to call the guy Blue and the gal Green. But it turns out that the more popular way to address them is the other way around nowadays and I, too, switched-a-looed the names.

This mistranslation comes from a very long way, since Pokémon Green Version was renamed to Blue Version (maybe because Americans like their flag's colors, I don't know).

Then, in the games, the rival is called Blue in English. In my opinion, he should be named Green, but that's not up to me anymore.
