Hey guys, so I've been wondering what's a good place to start the scanlations. /a/non said that he will stop after Volume 44 so should we start the scanlating at Volume 45?

I think that would be a good idea, it's no use to translate vol 44 if /a/non is going to translate that one already. It gives us also some more time to look for more helpers.

The question is if there are going to be any chapters in volume 45 that there aren't already magazine scanlations for. /a/non's translations could be used for those chapters that have already been translated. Though it would probably be polite to send /a/non an e-mail before you use his translations, if you choose to do so.

That's true, we don't know if anything has changed in the vol. For now I think vol 44 is the same as the magazine version.
I'll send him an message soon. I hope he won't mind.

We should wait with asking /a/non for permission until we know what chapters are in vol. 45.
What we should ask him right now is if he will still scan vol. 45-50, like he said in 2011 (anonscanlations.blogspot.com/2011/04/pokemon-special-ch-422-vol-38-batch.html).
/a/non sometimes ignore e-mails, so make sure that the e-mail looks professional and makes it clear that Team Special Scans is willing to take over after /a/non drops Pokémon Special.

Oh and sorry for going off on a tangent but are we also scanlating magazine releases (the ones that /a/non doesn't scanlate)? We will need scans of the RAWS though before we do anything. Should we ask Lolipiece to join since he somehow has access to scans of newly released rounds? Or whoever uploads the RAWS on JB's gallery which I'm pretty sure is Lolipiece but I may be wrong.

If we get access to unscanlated raws I'm sure we will try to scanlate it. Aren't the raws on jb2248.info only from /a/non and a few PokéSpe fans? Are we sure that Lolipiece's raw photos on tumblr / Bulbagarden Forums / Serebii Forums are actually his and not something he has found on Japanese sites? If Lolipiece has access to magazine raws I'm pretty sure that he would have sent it to /a/non already, unless he doesn't want to bend / debind his magazines. If Lolipiece can provide raws I think we should ask him to join. What do you guys think?

I'm pretty sure that unless he lives in Japan and he gets in line at a manga bookstore the day that rounds come out, he finds his scans on Japanese sites. Though since Lolipiece usually speculates what's going on when he posts pics and Coronis has to clear stuff up the next day, I don't think Lolipiece can read Japanese. But since he gets RAWS either way, I'm sure he'll be able to provide us with the necessary materials for translating.

Oh and we could also ask Coronis to join since he does the summarizing for non-Japanese audiences but I doubt he will because he has a million other things to do (I'm not even sure if he's aware of scanlation sites and whether he approves of them or not).

I don't see how Lolipiece's few random magazine photos are going to be of any help here.
I don't think that Coronis will support scanlations. Whatever you do, do not ask him via Serebii Forums or you will be punished hard by the mods there.

What we need is:
A) Somebody who lives close to a Japanese or Chinese bookstore that sells the magazines.
B) Donations to import them ourselves. I know how to import stuff from Japan, but I won't pay for the magazines or order them. I will however assist as much as possible if we at some point start importing the magazines from Japan.

Well if Lolipiece can't contribute majorly to this project then I would prefer him to not be a part of it because honestly I can live without the snark for one day.

And yeah...I don't really have much connections outside the U.S. so my powers are limited in terms of that. But I'll see what I can do.

EDIT: Um, think it's a good idea to advertise on JB's gallery that we need someone who can get a hold of RAWS scans? XD

Raw scans of what? We don't even know what volumes /a/non will scan yet and we don't know what magazines chapters /a/non will scan either. We should wait until we know for sure what we need. Then we ask JB to annouce on the main page that we need raws / funds, if he wants to, of course.

You live in the US? Perfect! Could buy the volumes for 7-10 dollars from Kinokuniya (kinokuniya.com/us/), debind them and scan them after /a/non has stopped scanning?

Well I know he said he'll stop after Volumes 45-50 but he said that two years ago and on the most recent blog he said that Volume 44 will be the last volume he'll do. He didn't make it clear what magazine rounds he'll scanlate. Other than that, your plan sounds perfect. Very Happy

And sure. I'll assume that that means starting at Volume 45.

/a/non said that he would scan, edit and translate up to vol. 44. He hasn't as far as I know said anything about if he will scan any volumes after that since his 2011 blog post. So, it could be either way, but it seems weird that he doesn't mention something that important when he has the chance in his 2013 Announcements blog post.

So either his plans haven't changed since 2011 or he changed his mind about stopping scanlations and we won't have to worry about this project for another few volumes? Hopefully it's the latter but the former seems more likely.

Apparently, /a/non knows someone who scans magazines and sells them online. I'm not sure, but if I remember correctly, the person demands him to buy the whole magazine, what is very expensive, considering we need just one chapter. If we can find someone who scans the magazine and sells only the chapter we need, it will be much better.

Think about it, if one of your friends has access to them and likes manga, he/she won't be throwing money away. He/she will enjoy a cool magazine, we just need some pages of it.

Maybe we could ask a translator to make a post of 2chan.net (sort of like Japan's 4chan) and 2ch.net (another big image board) asking for raws, especially magazine raws. Also, if a TLer knows any other good sites to post it on do that as well. If we feel really bold we could try posting it to boards.4chan.org/vp/ , but things might get crazy on 4chan.
By the way, has I love manga replied yet? We also have another TLer, by the way.

After crunching a few numbers I believe I should be able to afford providing the RAW scans of the volumes as well as a TLD(Top Level Domain) for the project.

My current hosting plan also allows me to host multiple websites for the same price.

I can get the TLD as soon as I get my May allowance if you want. Does teamspecialscans.com sound good?

Nicole has already agreed to provide volume raws for us (jb2448.info/Pokemon_Adventures_44/Pokemon_Special_v44_cover). However, she doesn't debind her volumes, she bends them instead, so the quality is not as good as /a/non's, but some image editing should make it good. What is needed most right now is funds for importing magazine chapters. If you would like I can teach you how to import items from Japan. If you could start importing the magazines that would be great.
teamspecialscans.com sounds very nice, but I like the functions and design of this forum very much. So, can we import this exact forum into that URL? Also, I believe that raws have a higher priority than a custom URL.

Spoiler:

Regarding the raws: I planned to rebind them into arc volumes, scanning them in while they were unbound. I can only afford to put about $10/month into this which is enough for 1 volume/bimonthly after shipping from Kinokuniya I'll have to edit in the URL next week, I don't believe it would be sufficient to keep up with the magazine chapters.

Regarding the TLD+hosting: I should be able to duplicate this over if you can get me a copy of the sql database and all of the files from the "public_html"/"web root" directory. I can't guarantee anything as I've never used PHPbb before. Another option would be to simply switch over to a Joomla+Kunena+uddeIM setup similar to what I use now and put the existing posts content into the first post in the thread. With the second option I can have a temporary subdomain and current posts quoted verbatim within the week(probably less but no promises), then replace the subdomain with the TLD once I get the funds next month. I will install a separate template(the Joomla name for a theme) for the projects section if you find one you prefer over the built-in one I use.

Debound raws can't be beaten, so if you want to debind the volumes and scan them that's great! We could have Nicole and Chamo as backup scanners in case something would happen.
I understand about the magazines. The shipping gets expensive there.

Here is where the forum skin is from: en.hitskin.com/search-a-skin/pokeball-conversion-164065.htm
Hopefully it works with non-Forumotion forums, so that you just have to enter an URL.
Either way, I rather have a nice looking Pokémon forum skin and an ok URL than a not so nice looking forum skin and the best URL. That's just my personal opinion though.

Cleaning shadows from raws is a hell but, in an emergency, any raw is worthy.

About the domain, I don't believe that moving the site's content will be enough, considering forummation's properties (it even has another name in my language, the system is all connected). But a redirect URL can be made of teamspecialscans.com. We publish this as the official link, and people are directed to this forumation forum.

OK then, I'll register the domain teamspecialscans.com as soon as I get my allowance and configure it to point to teamspecialscans.forummotion.com

The theme Manga Reader X gave me a link to would work on a PHPbb forum hosted with my provider, however it would be much easier for me to use a Kunena setup as I have experience with it and could set it up very quickly. I'll go ahead and setup an example/test of the forum on Kunena over the next day or two.

Has there been any confirmation of which volume we'll need to start scanning on yet?
